I have been in the nursing field for 16 years. I have encountered all walks of life at every stage of life. My expertise for postpartum care came naturally. I have always noticed a lack of care from the time the baby is born, through those first twelve weeks postpartum. The mother is bombarded with a lot of information. When they are sent home they become overwhelmed with this new world of theirs' and a lot of uncertainty on what to do next. This time is critical for new mothers because they are still at risk for maternal mortality and don't know what signs to look for to seek early treatment. This is especially the case in the black community. Black maternal patients have the highest rate of mortality and this is a crisis that needs to be averted. The first 24 hours postpartum is a critical time to monitor and educate mothers. Make them aware of the early signs and symptoms to look for and when to seek help. I have implemented different plans to use to bring a decrease in maternal mortality and educate staff and patients to produce better outcomes in patient care.
